Electricity Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has briefed the media on the ministerial determination for the procurement of 2500 MW of new nuclear generation.
The new nuclear procurement process is set to be gazetted, having met all new regulatory requirements.
Ramokgopa emphasized nuclear as a reliable energy source and highlighted the importance of an energy mix amidst the country’s energy crisis.
It’s crucial to note that the procurement process could take over 10 years to complete, with the first plant expected to be online around 2032.
The decision raises questions, with some pointing out the shift in affordability compared to previous assessments during Jacob Zuma’s era.
