Border Officials Uncover Nearly R1 Billion Worth of Drugs Hidden in Truck

Authorities have intercepted a massive drug consignment worth nearly R1 billion at the Beitbridge Port of Entry.
The operation was led by the Border Management Authority (BMA) together with several law enforcement agencies during an intelligence-driven operation targeting cross-border crime.
According to officials, a truck travelling from Malawi into South Africa was flagged and scanned at the border, where suspicious substances were detected.
An extensive search of the truck reportedly lasted around eight hours before officials discovered large quantities of methaqualone, commonly used in the production of mandrax.
Authorities say approximately 713,000 grams of the substance were recovered, with an estimated street value of around R998.2 million.
Three suspects were arrested during the operation and are expected to appear in court on drug trafficking charges.
The Hawks, SAPS K-9 Unit, and other specialised teams are continuing investigations into the syndicate and the intended destination of the drugs.
Officials say the seizure is one of the biggest drug interceptions at the border in recent times.
