SABC denies false claims about car radio licence fee

Johannesburg – Thursday, 8 May 2025 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has firmly denied claims circulating on social media and elsewhere that it is introducing a car radio licence fee.

The public broadcaster clarified that no such media statement was issued, and there is no directive, policy, or plan to implement a car radio licence fee.

“This disinformation is false, misleading, and designed to cause unnecessary panic and undermine the SABC,” the organisation said.

The current TV licence system remains unchanged and applies only to television sets, in line with the Broadcasting Act 4 of 1999 and TV Licence Regulations (2004).

Any proposed changes to this legal framework would require formal legislative amendments and public consultation.

The SABC highlighted that the timing of this disinformation is suspicious, as it coincides with the organisation celebrating 1 million subscribers on its streaming platform, SABC Plus.

Public Advisory:

The SABC urges South Africans to verify information through official SABC platforms and disregard fake news.
