A young Pretoria couple who had recently married have died in a head-on crash on the N3 highway in the Free State.
The accident happened around midday on Saturday between Warden and Villiers, when a light motor vehicle collided head-on with a truck. The force of the crash killed three people at the scene. Emergency services found the vehicles badly damaged with debris across the road.
Among those killed were Zane Hilton and his wife, Claryke Hilton, young newlyweds from Pretoria whose lives were cut short as they drove along the busy national route.
The couple had been planning their future together, and tributes from friends and family have poured in since the tragedy.
The truck driver survived with minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
N3 was closed in both directions for several hours as teams worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the cause of the crash.
Police and investigators are looking into what led to the collision as they continue to appeal to motorists to drive safely, especially during the busy festive season.
