Cape Town Motorist Fined R500 After Viral Littering Video

A Cape Town motorist who was caught on camera throwing litter out of his car has been fined R500 after the video went viral on social media.
The footage showed the driver tossing rubbish from his vehicle at a busy intersection in the Cape Town CBD. A tour guide behind him picked up the litter and threw it back into the car, but the driver then threw it out again and made rude gestures toward other road users.
City of Cape Town then launched a search for the motorist after the video spread online.
The driver came forward voluntarily and paid an admission of guilt fine under the city’s waste management by-law.
Law enforcement said the fine was issued in terms of the Integrated Waste Management By-Law and reminded the public that littering is an offence and the law applies to everyone.
City officials welcomed the outcome and urged motorists and residents to dispose of waste responsibly, saying even seemingly minor offences have consequences.
