Search Underway for Missing SANDF Soldier After Flood Sweep in Mpumalanga

A search operation is underway after a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) member was swept away by floodwaters in the Nkomazi River near Komatipoort, Mpumalanga.

The incident occurred on 25 December 2025 while SANDF military police were conducting routine patrols during Operation Corona. Their vehicle attempted to cross a river that had been heavily flooded by recent rains, and the strong current swept two soldiers away.

Rescue teams have recovered the body of one soldier. The second soldier remains missing, and efforts to find him are continuing.

Search and rescue teams, including SANDF support units, are focusing on locating the missing member as quickly as possible.

Defence and Military Veterans leaders have expressed condolences to the family of the deceased soldier and concern for the family of the missing soldier as the search goes on.

Police and military divers, air support and ground teams are involved in the ongoing operation.
