Hollywood is mourning the loss of Emmy-winning actress Valerie Mahaffey, who has passed away at the age of 71.
The acclaimed star, known for her unforgettable roles in Desperate Housewives, Young Sheldon, Big Sky and Dead To Me died on Friday in California after a battle with cancer, her family confirmed.

Mahaffey’s publicist shared the heartbreaking news with The Hollywood Reporter, while her husband, actor Joseph Kell, released an emotional tribute through Variety:
“I lost the love of my life, and America lost one of its most endearing actresses. She will be missed.”
The couple’s daughter, Alice, expressed her grief on Facebook, writing:
“Cancer sucks. I don’t really have the words. I’ll look for you in all the fun moments of life. I know that’s where you’ll be.”

Valerie Mahaffey had a career that spanned over five decades, making her a familiar and beloved face on screens both big and small. In 1992, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Eve in the cult hit Northern Exposure. Years earlier, she earned a Daytime Emmy for her performance on the soap opera The Doctors, which aired from 1979 to 1981.
Her film credits include powerful performances in movies like Sully, Seabiscuit, and French Exit, the latter earning her an Independent Spirit Award nomination in 2020 for her role as the eccentric Madame Reynard.
Born in Sumatra, Indonesia, to a Canadian mother and American father, Mahaffey moved to Texas during her teenage years. Her first film credit came in 1977 with Tell Me My Name, and she went on to become a familiar presence in American households, appearing in hit shows like ER, Glee, The Man in the High Castle, and more.
One of her most iconic TV roles came in Desperate Housewives, where she played Alma Hodge, the manipulative ex-wife of Orson Hodge, in a performance fans still talk about.
More recently, she played the stern teacher Victoria MacElroy in Young Sheldon, further solidifying her legacy as a versatile and unforgettable performer.
