Kwaito legend Mapaputsi, real name Sandile Ngwenya, has tragically passed away.
The news was confirmed by his former manager, Busisiwe Kunene, who revealed that he died on Thursday evening.
Mapaputsi had been battling ill health for several months, with reports suggesting that his condition began deteriorating towards the end of last year. Despite facing challenges, he remained optimistic and hopeful about his recovery.
Born in Zola, Soweto, Mapaputsi’s music career took off in the early 2000s. He gained widespread recognition for his 2001 album, “Izinja.” His distinctive style and contributions to the kwaito genre earned him numerous accolades.
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Mapaputsi was known for his commitment to supporting emerging artists.
He actively worked to ensure that the path he paved would remain accessible to others, emphasizing the importance of music rights and preventing artist exploitation.
