Bitou Deputy Mayor Under Investigation After Firing Gun at Cultural Celebration

PLETTENBERG BAY. The Deputy Mayor of Bitou Municipality, which includes Plettenberg Bay, is under police investigation after being filmed firing a gun during a cultural celebration.
Nokuzola Kolwapi was caught on camera firing a firearm while celebrating her son’s Umgidi, a traditional ceremony marking the return of initiates. The incident took place in KwaNokuthula, where initiates were being welcomed home.
In the video, Kolwapi is seen firing the gun several times as part of the celebrations. The footage has since circulated widely on social media, sparking public outrage.
Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway. No arrests have been made at this stage.
The African National Congress has called for swift action, saying public representatives are expected to uphold the law and set an example. The ANC says leaders must conduct themselves responsibly at all times.
Kolwapi’s party, the Ikhwezi Political Movement, has not yet issued an official response to the incident.
The case has drawn comparisons to a recent matter involving EFF leader Julius Malema, who was found guilty of a similar offence. Malema is expected to be sentenced early next year.
