Mother and Three Men Charged After 4-Year-Old Seen Smoking Drugs

A shocking video showing a four-year-old boy smoking drugs has led to the arrest and court appearance of his mother and three men in Johannesburg.

The disturbing footage, which circulated widely on social media, depicts the child inhaling from a mandrax‑laced pipe while adults encourage him to continue. The video sparked national outrage and urgent calls for justice.

Police confirmed that the suspects — the child’s 29‑year‑old mother and three men aged between 35 and 51 — were taken into custody after an intensive investigation. They have been formally charged with attempted murder.

On Wednesday, the four appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. The case has been postponed to allow for further investigations. All suspects remain in custody.

Authorities say the child has been removed from the environment and placed in protective care. Social workers and child protection services are now involved to ensure his wellbeing.

Police have appealed to the public to continue reporting similar cases of child abuse and exploitation.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo said:

“This case highlights the severe consequences of exposing children to drugs. The swift response demonstrates our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of society.”

The case continues.
