A brazen cash-in-transit heist attempt was dramatically foiled early Wednesday morning in Umlazi when armed suspects chased a cash van into Mega City Mall.
The high-speed pursuit, captured on video and widely shared on social media, shows the van being pursued by a white Toyota bakkie carrying at least two men openly wielding assault rifles.
According to eyewitnesses, the armed attackers trailed the van moments after 6 a.m., but the van’s crew acted swiftly, heading straight into the mall passage.
Guards on duty reacted quickly by shutting the service gate behind the van, preventing the attackers from entering the building.
Frustrated by their failed ambush, the suspects fired shots into the air before speeding off.
No injuries were reported and nothing was stolen during the incident.
This attempted heist highlights the increasing threat to cash vans in KwaZulu-Natal, with criminal syndicates continuing to test the responsiveness of law enforcement.
