Soweto in Shock: Four Kids Die After Eating Snacks

Tragedy has once again hit the community of Naledi, Soweto, as four children from two different schools have passed away, with a fifth child fighting for his life in ICU.

The heartbreaking incident comes exactly a year after two kids died from suspected food poisoning, also after eating snacks from a local spaza shop.

On October 2 last year, four boys reportedly fell sick after eating biscuits bought from a spaza shop.

Sadly, two of them died the same day, while the other two survived after weeks in intensive care. This time, five kids became seriously ill after eating snacks from spaza shops in two separate incidents.

Three children from Karabo Primary School and one from Khauhelo Primary School passed away, while another boy from Karabo Primary remains in critical condition.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane confirmed the devastating news, explaining that the grade 1, 2, and 3 learners from Karabo Primary died after consuming food suspected to be poisoned.

The grade 1 boy who survived is currently receiving treatment. In a separate incident, an 8-year-old grade 2 boy from Khauhelo Primary also lost his life after eating snacks from a local spaza shop in Naledi.

Police are actively investigating the cause of these deaths, and Chiloane extended his condolences to the families and school communities affected by the tragedy.

He emphasized the importance of caution when it comes to the food children consume, while the Department of Education is providing psycho-social support to learners, teachers, and families affected by this devastating event.
